Women’s Basketball Grabs First Win In Las Positas Tournament

The College of Marin Women’s Basketball Team traveled to Livermore to compete in the annual Las Positas Tournament. The Mariners lost on the first day, but pulled out a victory in their second game before falling in the finale to finish the tournament with a 1-2 record. They did record their first win of the season against El Camino College Compton Center on Friday.

The Mariners opened up the tournament on Thursday, November 12th with a game against Redwoods College. Redwoods pushed the Mariners from the outset with an aggressive full court press. Marin was able to keep pace through the first half, but lost touch in the second falling by a score of 77-48. Molly Carmody led the Mariners with 20 points, 10 rebounds and an assist, while Jaychelle Price had nine points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

The loss on the opening night setup a matchup with El Camino College Compton Center on Friday afternoon of the tournament. The game was an even matched affair in the first half with Compton Center taking a 30-29 lead into half time. The Mariners took the lead in the third quarter capped by a buzzer beating three pointer by Price to take a 49-44 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Mariners turned the Tartars over on four consecutive possessions to begin the fourth quarter and take control of the game in route to a 66-55 victory.  Price led the Mariners with 23 points, six assists and six steals. Carmody scored 17 with five rebounds and five assists.  Ureka Abbushi contributed 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the win.

The win put the Mariners into the consolation final against Cuesta College on Saturday, November 14th at 11AM. Cuesta jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and a 16-8 score at the end of the first quarter, an Abbushi three pointer and Carmody fast break layup tied the score up at 18-18 before a Cuesta run made the halftime score 31-23.  The Mariners did what they could to keep it close but fell behind in the second half and lost by a final score of 63-47. Despite the loss, College of Marin showed glimpses of its potential as Carmody led the way again with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Darrian Cross added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Abbushi scored 10 while grabbing 8 rebounds.

With five games under the belt, the Mariners are starting to come together as a team. The balanced attack currently has four players averaging nine or more points a game with five players grabbing five or more boards per game.

The Mariners next game is against Cabrillo College at home on November 18th at 5PM.
