Women’s Basketball Shows Bright Spots In Losses at West Hills Tournament

While the Mariners’ season has not gone as planned, things are looking up for College of Marin Women’s Basketball. Following a pair of losses in Lemoore, the team’s 1-9 record does not accurately reflect the level of talent they possess. Hopefully the 2015-2016 season will mirror that of the previous year. The 2014-2015 team had a 3-7 nonconference schedule before posting a 10-6 conference record. The current team has the skill, but needs refinement to put it all together.

The opening game against 15th ranked Cerritos College had the makings of a close affair in the first half. Cerritos led 18-12 after the first quarter and took a 32-23 lead into the half time break. The Mariners came out quick and brought the score to 33-27 before a staggering run by Cerritos put the game out of reach. Despite the 77-40 final, the game was more competitive than the score would indicate. Freshman guard Molly Carmody led the way with 18 points on 4-4 shooting from the three point line. Darrian Cross had 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals and Jaychelle Price had six points five rebounds and two steals.

The Mariners faced College of the Redwoods on the second day of the tournament, a rematch from the Las Positas Tournament in November. The Mariners jumped out to an early 10-5 lead but Redwoods drew even at 13 by the end of the first quarter. Redwoods took a 37-27 lead at halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 68-47 victory. The Mariners were again led by Molly Carmody who had 16 points to lead the Mariners. Ureka Abbushi filled up the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals.

The Mariners final preseason contest is at Monterey Peninsula College on December 30th at 3PM
