College of Marin Women’s Basketball Falls to Las Positas In Hawks Classic Opener 67-56
The shorthanded Mariners made a valiant attempt to take their tournament opener against Las Positas on Thursday evening.  The team dressed only six players to take on the Las Positas College Hawks and managed to hold a narrow lead entering the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, injuries and fouls forced the Mariners to end the game with only three, as they fell 67-56.

The game started out strongly as Marin jumped out to a 15-7 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was a little more balanced as Las Positas rallied, but the Mariners entered halftime with a 29-25 lead. Marin pushed their lead to double digits midway through the third quarter but a pair of turnovers cut their lead to just seven at 48-41 at the end the third. The last play of the quarter also resulted in an injury to starting guard Ureka Abbushi, forcing her from the game.

The Mariners entered the fourth quarter down to just five healthy players, and kept the lead until losing two players to fouls within a minute span. With five minutes remaining, Daniella Cerruti fouled out before being quickly followed by Regan Andel. The remaining squad of J'Mia McKinney, Tori Buckley and Neshele Morgan-Wesley did their best to keep close but the five on three disadvantage was too much to overcome, as the Mariners were outscored 26-8 in the fourth quarter for a 67-56 final score.

Despite the loss, there were several bright spots for Marin. Ureka Abbushi filled up the stat sheet with five points, six assists, four steals and 17 rebounds in just three quarters of play. J'Mia McKinney led Marin with 18 points and seven rebounds while Tori Buckley had 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
