Buzzer Beater Rims Out As Mariners Drop Tournament Opener To Lassen 63-60

With the Mariners down three and eight seconds remaining on the clock. Victoria Lane took the inbounds pass to the opposing three point arc. She stopped, pivoted and found teammate Kaleah Williams who launched the potential game tying shot from 22 feet out. The high arcing shot looked to be on target, but it hit the back iron and rimmed out and the Mariners fell 63-60 to Lassen College in the opener of the Modesto College Tournament.

The game was evenly played the entire way as the teams drew even at 13-13 by the end of the first quarter. Lassen College pulled ahead with a two point advantage at halftime as they took a 30-28 into the locker room. Marin kept it close but trailed at the end of the third 46-43. The Mariners kept trying to take the lead, but Lassen continued to fend them off through the waning minutes of the fourth. They trailed by just three when William's shot rattled out at the buzzer.

Lane had an excellent all-around game, as she led all players with 24 points on the afternoon. She also had five rebounds, four assists and eight steals, but struggled a bit with ball control as she racked up eight turnovers. Kyra Bolden had 12 points for the Mariners and added nine rebounds and three steals of her own while Williams had 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Mariners.

Lassen College was led by a trio of scorers, Shayla Carrier had 15 points and seven rebounds. Gracie McCoy added 14 points and Jocelyn Gandara had 13 points and seven rebounds on the afternoon.

The loss puts the Mariners into must win mode against DeAnza College on the second day of the tournament.
