Shorthanded Marin Women’s Basketball Drops Close Game To Los Medanos 70-63

The Mariners fought their hardest, but numbers and fatigue eventually took its toll as Marin fell to the Los Medanos College Mustangs 70-63 on Wednesday evening in Kentfield. Playing without their starting center Janea Early, the Mariners managed to comeback from an early deficit to take a halftime lead. Their advantage waned in the third quarter, and the visitors rallied in a big fourth quarter as Marin fell 70-63.

The Mustangs began the game on fire, aggressively driving the lanes and finding open shooters. They lead 17-5 before Marin began to rally. Kaleah Williams hit back to back deep three pointers and Maya Murry-Pena swished two free throws to cut the lead to 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Marin as the aggressor, Williams showed off her sharpshooting abilities, nailing three three pointers while Kyra Bolden and Lane each chipped in four points of their own. At halftime, Marin led Los Medanos 36-32.

The Mariners carried their momentum through to the third quarter, opening up on a 9-5 capped by a Bolden three pointer to lead 45-37. They extended their lead to double digits at 51-41 midway through the third, but that was unfortunately their pinnacle. After a timeout, the Mustangs responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to single point with a minute left in the third. Marin took a 53-32 lead to start the fourth, but it was their last lead of the game.

Los Medanos was fierce in the fourth, with a series of driving layups and elegant floaters. They took a 68-59 lead with four minutes left and Marin could do little to stop them. The final score read 70-63.

Williams led the Mariners with 22 points on 8-15 shooting. Lane struggled from the floor, but managed 15 points and 11 rebounds on the evening. Bolden chipped in 15 points of her own and eight rebounds as well.

Marin has a day off, before a tough road trip to Solano College on Friday.
