Vanessa Torres Is January Co-Mariner of the Month

Freshman Vanessa Torres was named Co-Mariner of the Month for January. The guard for the Women’s Basketball team averaged 12.0 points per game in January, including double digits in four of the Mariners’ seven games.

Torres’ career best game occurred on January 8th as the Mariners took down the Los Medanos College Mustangs 60-46. The freshman scored a game high 19 points on 7-16 shooting. She made a career best four three pointers and grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out three assists and swiping a pair of steals. The Mariners outclassed LMC in the second half in large part due to Torres.

The Los Medanos game served as a launching point for Torres who recorded double digit scoring in four consecutive games. Days later at Solano, Torres scored 16 points in a close loss to the Falcons. She played all 40 minutes as the Mariners went down 59-48, but Torres finished the game as the top scorer for both teams. She made three triples and added five rebounds, two steals and a block in the game.

She was Marin’s top scorer against Merritt College on January 15th as her team went down 63-39. Torres scored 14 points on 4-18 shooting but made a pair of threes and was perfect at the free throw line. She added two boards, three assists and two steals.

Torres followed that up with an excellent showing at Laney on January 22nd. She scored 15 points with four assists and three steals in Marin’s 52-45 defeat in Oakland.

Vanessa Torres completed a successful January with career best numbers across the board, in addition to averaging 12.0 points per game she also averaged 5.1 rebounds per game, 3.6 assists per game and 1.9 steals per game. Her shooting percentages all improved to career highs in the month and she helped the Mariners win a pair of games over Los Medanos and Mendocino.

The freshman guard is looking to close out her debut season in style and build towards an even better sophomore year.
