COM Women's Soccer Finishes Successful 2016 Season

The College of Marin Women’s Soccer Team had a successful, albeit occasionally bumpy 2016 season. The team overcame numerous injuries to be very competitive in the Bay Valley Conference, finishing just a win shy of fourth place in the league. The youthful team had but a single returner, Maddie Bailey, who anchored the backline for Marin.

A few early setbacks did not put a damper on the year as a whole, as the Mariners grabbed their first result on September 30th against Los Medanos College with a 2-2 tie.  A pair of early goals gave Marin a 2-0 halftime lead before a furious LMC comeback saw the game end as a draw. Despite the chance to win, it was an uplifting moment for the team as they tasted their first success of the season.

Marin’s first win of the year was not far behind as they defeated Napa Valley College on the road 1-0 on October 11th. It wasn’t until the 70th minute where Marin found the breakthrough as Freshman Tatum Robach scored off a rebound for the only goal of the game. The team’s second victory of the year came less a month later against the same opponent. Marin hosted Napa Valley College on November 8th and registered a convincing 2-0 win with goals from Christine Wilhoyte and Robach.

Although they only recorded a pair of victories across the season, the team grew with every game, and competed in the lion share of conference matches.

The team did well for itself with BVC Awards as Maddie Bailey and Freshman Elise Perez were both named to the Bay Valley Conference All-Conference Second Team.

Maddie Bailey also garnered Team MVP for her work on the back four and had her signature offensive moment against Solano College on September 27th. She nailed a perfect free kick from 30 yards out to give Marin their only goal of the match.

Elise Perez was named Defensive MVP of the team for her work shifting between the defensive four and the defensive midfield. She also had a remarkable goal against Siskiyous College on September 12th where she slalomed between five defenders before finishing past the opposing keeper.

Freshman Tatum Robach received the Offensive MVP team award as she led Marin with four goals, including the game winner against Napa on the road. She had four of Marin’s nine goals of the season and was a constant threat to opposing defenses on the left wing.

Freshman Ana Kravitz received the Coaches Award for her tireless effort on and off the field. She assisted on both goals in the Marin draw against Los Medanos and played in nearly every match for the Mariners.

Head Coach Andrew Jones was very pleased with his team’s effort throughout the season, “With a limited pre-season and many injuries early in the year, Our team was able to consistently improve throughout the season and proved to be competitive in the Bay Valley Conference.  We finished the season with a lot of momentum and we are looking to pick up right where we left off in the 2017 season. Near year should be even better as we have many core players returning for next season”
