The Mariners grabbed their first victory of the 2018 season, a 3-2 five goal affair, over the DeAnza College Dons on Friday. Deirdre Hyde had a pair of goals in her debut match of the year while Jurany Pohl opened her and the team goal account early in the first half. Odaiclet Piccinini and Wendy Fullham split time in goal and performed admirable against a barrage of shots.

Slow starts have unfortunately been a hallmark of Mariners' Soccer in recent years, but Friday was pleasantly different. Marin broke through first, as in the 12^th minute Sophomore Disa Johansson dribbled up the center of the field and found Pohl with a through ball. Pohl used her speed and footwork to beat two defenders before finishing past the keeper for a Mariners' lead.

The lead lasted for ten minutes before DeAnza responded in kind with an excellent individual effort by Paola Mendoza. She beat the Mariners defense and the keeper to tie the game up at 1-1.

Freshman Deidre Hyde missed the first match of the season due to an injury. She was deemed fit enough for the match against DeAnza, and the Mariners were glad to have her. She showed her deft skill in close quarters in the 28^th minute. A Marin corner kick was deflected by the DeAnza keeper. It fell to Hyde who untied the game with a power shot into the back corner for a 2-1 Mariners advantage.

The score remained the same through halftime and well into the second half before Hyde made her mark on the game yet again.

It was the 80^th minute when Natalie Battilana's shot rebounded out to the top of the box. It found the foot of Hyde, who stuck it low and left past the keeper and into the net for a 3-1 Mariners' lead. After being stifled in their first match, it was excellent to see the Mariners find the goal three times.

DeAnza did not go quietly as they battled and managed a goal in the 85^th minute to make it 3-2, but the Mariners did all they needed to, in order to prevent the tying goal and seal their first victory of the year.  

Piccinini tallied six saves while in goal, and allowed just one past her, while Wendy Fullam allowed a goal but a made a save when between the posts. The Mariners had 10 shots on goal and had several excellent spells of possession.
