College of Marin Soccer Defeats Napa 2-1 In Bay Valley Opener

Marin Soccer began their conference season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over the Napa Valley College storm on Friday. It was scoreless first half that led to an exciting second half for Marin. Goals from Deirdre Hyde and Wendy Fullam proved to be the difference in the match.

The scoreless first half was not without drama as the Mariners had a pair of excellent chances that went just wide. Deirdre Hyde took a shot from the top of the box that the Napa keeper barely deflected just outside of the goal post.

Marin went to the half with the better performance but no advantage. That changed in the second half.

After a slow start, Deirdre Hyde got things going in the 60th minute. She was fouled just outside the box and earned a direct free kick for her efforts. Her shot curled past the arms of the Napa keeper and into the back of the next for a 1-0 Mariners lead.

Napa got on the counter, but could not find an equalizer. Hyde was at it again in the 80th minute as she fed Wendy Fullam on the break who scored to give the Mariners a 2-0 advantage. Marin had a chance to cruise to victory but the home team had other ideas.

Napa took their deficit to heart and rallied mightily as the minutes waned. They unleashed a relentless attack that culminated in an 88th minute goal to bring the score to 2-1 Marin. Napa pelted the Marin goal for the remaining moments, but the Marin defense proved stalwart enough to hold off the attack and secure the victory.

The win broke the Mariners four match winless streak and moved their overall record to 2-4-1 on the season.

Next up for Marin is a home match against Solano College on Tuesday, October 2nd.
