Soccer Tallies Grabs Third Place and Four All-Conference Awards In 2018 Season

Mariners’ Soccer enjoyed their second consecutive winning season in 2018. The team finished with an 8-7-2 record overall and a sparkling 7-3-1 record in the Bay Valley Conference, good for a third-place finish. The season features plenty of highs including a road win over perennial favorite Solano and a victory over an undefeated Los Medanos College. Much of the team’s success is owed to their four dynamic players that earned Bay Valley All-Conference Honors.

Midfield Elise Perez was named to the Bay Valley Conference First Team at the post season meetings. The Sophomore Co-Captain was a significant part of the Mariners’ offense and defense. She played primarily as a box to box midfielder, thwarting the opposition’s attack while processing a powerful shot in her own right. Perez scored seven goals in 16 matches and added an assist as well. She had a hat trick against Mendocino College on October 23rd and days later provided the opening goal the team’s superb victory over Solano College.

Defender Disa Johansson also earned First Team Honors from the Bay Valley Conference for her second consecutive year. The Sophomore Co-Captain competed in all 17 of the team’s matches and scored three goals and two assists. She anchored the central defense the entire year and was critical to the team’s four consecutive shutouts in October. Johansson could also be an offensive threat when needed. She had an excellent long-distance goal against Feather River and scored twice against Mendocino College.

Marin’s success in 2018 also leaned on several newcomers to the team.

Freshman Deidre Hyde certainly played the role of contributor quite well. The Forward earned Bay Valley Second Team Honors with her team leading nine goals in just 13 matches. Hyde tallied four game winning goals during the season. She scored twice, including the game winner in her debut against De Anza College. She netted the eventual winner against Solano and scored the only goal of the match against Los Medanos in Marin’s victory.

Freshman Wendy Fullam was undoubtably one of the most versatile players on 2018 squad.  She played all over the field early on, but settled it a role in central defense, one that earned her a spot on the Bay Valley All-Conference Second Team. She began the season as an attacking midfielder and she scored the game winning goal against Napa Valley in the Conference opener. After tactical adjustments, Fullam found herself paired with Johansson in central defense for the second half of the season. Her tenacity and skill powered the Mariners six match win streak in October and the first game of November.

College of Marin Soccer enjoyed a very successful 2018 season, and much of that was due to the team’s four All-Conference players.
