College of Marin Women's Soccer opened their 2019 campaign with a home loss to DeAnza College 3-2. The Mariners began the game uncertain in the defense which led to a pair of early goals by the visiting Dons. Marin rallied but it was not enough as DeAnza emerged with the win.

DeAnza began the match on the offensive as they pressured the Mariners' defense from the outset. Their tenacity was rewarded early on as Valerie Valdivia beat Marin's keeper Charlotte Sklar to the left for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. The Dons doubled their lead just two minutes later as Katelyn Alfonso found the back of the net for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Mariners were undaunted by the early deficit, as newly minted striker Sophia-Isabel Maso made it her mission to pull the Mariners back. Maso took a ball from strike partner Juliana Oliveria Cortinhas in the 19^th minute and scored from outside the 18-yard box to cut DeAnza's lead to 2-1.

Maso and Cortinhas proved to be invaluable to the Mariners' offense as they peppered goal throughout the first half. The two combined for seven shots in the first 45 minutes of competition. The scored remained 2-1 until Maso scored her second goal in the 41^st minute. She received a pass from Freshman Yuliana Velazquez Signor on the right side of the 18-yard box and beat DeAnza's Ari Jaramillo to the right.

The teams went to the break knotted up at 2-2 but that score line was short-lived as the second half kicked off. DeAnza's first half aggression returned in the form of several romps inside the Mariners' defensive third. While they did not score outright, a loose ball in the box resulted in a handball against Marin and a penalty to the Dons. They converted in the 56^th minute to take a 3-2 lead.

The Mariners battled but were unable to draw level despite the best efforts of Maso and Cortinhas. The final whistle blew as Marin took the 3-2 defeat.

The Mariners peppered the DeAnza goal with 19 total shots and 11 on goal, but was not enough to overcome the Dons. Maso scored her first two goals of the season while Cortinhas and Signor were credited with assists. Jesse Vasquez was handed a yellow card in the second half.

The Mariners have a week of training before a road match at Skyline College on Friday, September 6^th.
