Mariners’ Women’s Soccer Lets Game Get Away At Skyline

Marin Women's soccer started off on a high note at Skyline, but ended lower as the hosting Skyline Trojans blasted the Mariners for eight goals, four in each half in an 8-3 defeat. The Mariners took a lead inside the first 15 minutes, but defensive breakdowns saw the team concede within five minutes and allow a trio of goals just before the first half whistle. It was another good showing for sophomore Sophia-Isabel Maso who scored twice for Marin.

Maso put the Mariners out in front in the 12th minute as she intercepted a pass at the end of the box and beat the keeper from right to left for a 1-0 Marin lead. The lead lasted just five minutes as Skyline's Celeste Henry scored off a pass from Sierra Olsen to even the score at 1-1.

The match remained at 1-1 until the 38th minute when the wheels started to come off. Skyline scored three goals in rapid success to take a 4-1 lead into the halftime break.

After the half, Skyline scored again to take a 5-1 lead before Marin answered back. Juliana Oliveria Cortinhas got inside the box and beat Skyline's keeper to make the score 5-2 in favor of Skyline.

The Trojans showed little mercy as Celeste Henry scored twice more three minutes apart to push their advantage to five goals. Sophia-Isabel Maso answered with a long-range effort to make the score 7-3 minutes later, but it was not enough. Henry added another goal, her fifth of the day to make the score line final at 8-3.

Despite the loss, Maso showed her mettle. With two goals against Skyline the sophomore has four in just two matches. Cortinhas opened her Mariners' account with a goal and added an assist on Maso's second score.

The loss was the Mariners' second in as many matches, but they have a good opportunity to nab their first victory of the year against Chabot College at home on Tuesday, September 10th at 4pm.
