Mariners Run Past Merritt 9-0

The Mariners looked to continue their strong start to Bay Valley Conference play when they played host to the Thunderbirds of Merritt College. An aggressive and attacking game plan had the Mariners flying into the Merritt half of the field from the opening whistle. Despite some great goalkeeping from the Merritt goalkeeper, the final score was a 9-0 win in favor of the Mariners.

Emily Braganza finished off a Cyrene Paez pass to score the first of four goals for the Mariners in the first half. Sophomore Juliana Oliveira slotted home the next two Mariners goals, with assists from Yuliana Velazquez and Braganza, respectively. Velazquez would close the scoring for the first half on a fantastic individual effort, navigating through the Merritt defense and finding the back of the net.

To start the second half, the Mariners would put away another early goal, this time Paez finishing the play after an assist from Bella Pantaleon. Oliveira would score her third goal of the day off a Kelley Grant pass before Pantaleon scored the goal of the day, a rocket into the upper corner. Braganza and Velazquez combined for a goal, and Velazquez would close off the scoring with a goal assisted by Ana Primero.

The Mariners take their 2-0 conference record on the road next, as they head to Yuba College this Friday, October 1st.
