College of Marin Volleyball traveled to Sacramento for the Cosumnes River Quad on Friday. They faced off against the host team Cosumnes River College as well as the visiting Columbia College. The Mariners split on the day falling to the host team 3-1 but responded well with a 3-0 sweep of Columbia College.
The Mariners came out slowly in their first match as they dropped the first two sets to Cosumnes River College 25-14 and 25-11. The team responded well with a very competitive third set that Marin took 25-22. The fourth set needed extra points which cosumnes River won 27-25.
Despite the loss in the match, the Mariners competed well led by Freshman Alejandra Leon who had 12 kills and 15 digs. Sarah Harris had 36 assists and 13 digs as the setter while Salomi Galodamu had seven kills, two aces and a block.
Coach Gera was pleased with the performance in the first match of the day, "Our team showed a lot of fight against Cosumnes River. After being down 0-2 in the match we really came together played with great energy and rose to the challenge. We had some entertain rally's and stayed patient in transition. Alejandra Leon was our spark throughout the match and continued to terminate and produce for us. Middle blockers Elisa Steele and Salomi Galodamu continue to add depth to our offensive system."
The Mariners displayed their resiliency in their second match of the day. Against Columbia College, COM was the aggressor. They controlled the game play from the outset and easily dispatched their opponent in straight sets.
Marin used a balanced approach with contributions across the board. Leon led the way with seven kills and 11 digs. Bella De Souza had four kills and seven digs. Sarah Harris had 18 assists and five digs while her sister Emma had four kills and five digs of her own. Galodamu had three kills, five digs and three blocks of her own.
On the day, Coach Gera took pride in her team's effort "I love that we are being challenged in the preseason. It gives our players a chance to embrace diversity and grow as a team."
The Mariners next challenge is Santa Rosa Junior College at the West Valley Quad on Wednesday, September 6th.
