Mariners’ Volleyball Thrashes Napa 3-0 In Bay Valley Conference Opener

After a brisk and brutal non-conference schedule, the Mariners felt right at home against Napa Valley College. The result, a 3-0 victory and an excellent start to 2018 Bay Valley Conference play. Marin played generally mistake free volleyball and used their superior length as an advantage over the Storm. Attackers Salomi Galodamu, Sasha Urban and Alejandra Leon all feasted on the Napa defense in route to double digit scoring games in the 25-12. 25-18, and 25-8 match victory.

Marin breezed through the first set with an early 9-4 lead that they extended out to 13-6 before Napa was forced to call a timeout. The match pause did not phase Marin as they reeled off a 12-6 run, capped by a Sarah Harris kill to end the set 25-12.

Marin was a bit careless at times in the second set. They took a sizeable lead at 20-9 but lacked a killer instinct as Napa rallied to make it close before a few hitting errors gave the Mariners a 25-18 win.

They showed no mercy in the third, with quick passing and excellent decision making. Marin raced to a 6-1 lead and extended it to 16-5 before Kirsta Rodriguez-McKee settled the match with an ace in the 25-8 final set.

As a team the Mariners hit better than .100 in every set, .256 in the first, .103 in the second and .281 in the third and individually many Mariners had excellent statistical efforts.

Galodamu led the team with 14 points in a double double effort. She had 12 kills, two aces and a team high 10 digs in the match. Urban had 12 points, from 10 kills and two aces, while adding nine digs. Leon had nine kills, three aces and six digs for 12 points of her own. Not to be forgotten Sarah Harris once again filled up the score sheet with seven kills, an ace, 1.5 blocks, 27 assists and four digs.

It was a good start to the conference schedule for the Mariners, who look to push their current winning streak to three on Friday at Contra Costa College at 6pm.
