Mariners' Volleyball showed their quality against perennial BVC Contender Yuba College at home on Wednesday. College of Marin fell in the first set but responded with three straight set wins to take the match 3-1 over the 49ers. Sophomore outside hitters Alejandra Leon and Salomi Galodamu shared the spotlight as they both tallied 18 points for Marin.
The Mariners endured a bit of a slow start to the match as they trailed 10-4 early on in the first set. Yuba kept the pressure up and led 16-8 before closing out Marin 25-18 for an early road advantage. The Mariners were sloppy as they had nine hitting errors and just nine kills to match while Yuba had 13 kills and just a pair of hitting errors to their credit.
The tides turned quickly in Marin's favor as they opened the second set on a 13-6 run and carried through the entire set for 25-14 victory to equal the match at 1-1. Marin hit much better as they had seven kills and just two errors, while Yuba shot themselves in the foot with six kills and 12 errors.
Marin poured in on in the third set, producing one of the their best of the season. Tied 5-5, a several minute-long rally was finished off by Galodamu and sparked the key moment in the match for the Mariners. They extended their advantage to 11-5 before a long string of service by Ashley Chanthongthip pushed the lead to 20-10. Marin did not allow another point and defeated Yuba in the third 25-10. In the set the Mariners had 14 kills and just three errors.
Marin cruised through the fourth and final set to a 25-16 win to clinch the match.
Leon and Galodamu led the way for Marin. Leon had 15 kills against just three hitting errors for the Mariners. She hit .324 on the day and added two assists, three aces and nine digs to the stat sheet. Galodamu matched her nearly hit for hit, as the Sophomore had 14 kills, three aces and two block assists for her 18-point evening. Galodamu matched her point total in digs with 18 as well. Magnolia Johnson was no slouch either as she had 20 digs, while Sarah Harris led the team with 29 assists in the match.
The victory improved the Mariners' record to 5-2 in the Bay Valley Conference and 8-7 overall. They sit in third place behind Los Medanos and Solano Colleges.
Next up for the Mariners is a road match at Napa Valley College on Wednesday, October 17th at 6pm.
