Mariners’ Volleyball Falls in Four At San Jose

College of Marin Volleyball continued their non-conference gauntlet on Monday as they traveled to San Jose City College to take on the Jaguars. The result was a haughtily contested four set loss. The Mariners dropped the first two sets before rallying for a third set victory, but that was undone in a tight fourth set that clinched the match for the home team. Sasha Urban and Beatrice Heimbrodt starred for the Mariners in the loss.

It was a generally well-played match with skills vs skill as opposed to mistake vs mistake. The first set wsa close but the Mariners fell 25-19. The second saw San Jose out in front for much of it, and grab a 25-17 win to take a commanding lead in the match.

The Mariners did not go quietly as they fought and clawed for a third set victory 27-25. Their momentum carried them through part of the fourth set, but they were ultimately downed by four 25-21.

It was certainly a game of growth for the Mariners as Heimbrodt and Urban each had their finest matches of the young season. Heimbrodt had an impressive double double with 13 kills, and 15 digs. She added an ace and two block assists for 15 points on evening. Urban also showcased her versatility with 10 kills, and nine digs to go with two aces and block assists for a 13-point affair.

Magnolia Johnson was excellent as libero with 22 digs and added five assists while Makenzie Dugan excelled as the setter with 28 assists and 20 digs on the day.

The Mariners continue their busy schedule with a double header at Consumes River College on Wednesday September 11th. They play the Modesto Pirates and the hosting Hawks beginning at 2pm.
