Mariners Drop BVC Opener to 22nd Ranked Solano

College of Marin Volleyball began Bay Valley Conference play on Wednesday and received a rude greeting by the Solano College Falcons. The 22nd ranked Solano College showed little mercy to the Mariners who fell in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-19. It was a difficult match all around, but Makenzie Dugan managed to record a double double while Remy Pelzman notched six kills and 10 digs on the evening.

The first set was a tad sloppy on both sides of the net, but the hosting Falcons took greater advantage of the Mariners than the other way around. Marin struggled to hit as they recorded just a pair of kills. Solano made eight errors which contributed to the 25-10 final score of the opening set.

The Mariners upped their game in the second, but so did Solano as the home team cut down on errors and hit .333 in a 25-13 win. College of Marin did not go down without a fight as they battled mightily, deep into the third set. Marin managed to record 19 points, but they could not overcome 15 kills from Solano in the deciding set.

The loss was not all bad for Marin. They hit positive on the day with 20 kills against 18 errors. Dugan led the way with a team leading 17 assists and 11 digs. She even added a pair of kills from the setter position.

Pelzman had a team high six kills and added 10 digs while Sasha Urban also had six kills and one of the Mariners' two aces.

The loss dropped the Mariners to 2-8 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play. It must be noted that the Mariners have enduring a considerably tougher schedule than the bulk of their conference rivals.

Next up for Marin pair of regional matches on Friday, September 20th. They host the CCSF Rams at 3pm before doing battle with the Las Positas Hawks at 6pm the same day.
