Mariners Volleyball Christens New Facility With 4-1 Victory Over San Mateo

It did not take long for the Mariners to record their first official home victory. Marin Beach Volleyball opened the Beach Volleyball Complex with a 4-1 match victory over the College of San Mateo Bulldogs on Friday. It was the first half of a two-match day as the Mariners also took on the University of San Francisco Dons.

The sophomore duo of Sarah Harris and Alejandra Leon started the day off right with a victory over the top pair from College of San Mateo. Leon, is in her second season in the top spot while Harris was promoted after playing her freshman year as a two or three. They made quick work of the opposing Bulldogs with a 2-0 match victory 21-11 and 21-16.

The twos pairing of Magnolia Johnson and Amber Proctor faced some adversity in their opening match. They fought hard but were ultimately defeated by the number two team from San Mateo 2-0 by set scores of 21-17 and 21-16. Despite the loss, they were upbeat knowing their team pulled out a victory.

First year Beach Volleyballers Nattasia Ferrin and Kirsta Rodriguez-McKee comprised the three's and thoroughly dominated in a 2-0 victory. They won the first set 21-5 before easing off the throttle but still pulled off the 22-20 win over San Mateo's threes.

The fours pairing for the opening match comprised of Freshman Luisa Ayala and Khadeejia Marcum. Neither competed for Marin during the 2018 indoor season, but both excelled in the start of their outdoor careers. The duo took down San Mateo 21-18 and 21-17 in a two-set victory.

San Mateo could not field a fifth pair and such the victory was awarded to the Mariners. Ashley Chanthongthip and Mackenzie Graham would have filled that slot if the visitors had a full team.

The Mariners opened the season in an excellent fashion and hopefully will build on it throughout the year.
