Mariners’ Beach Volleyball Splits Matches On Sophomore Day

The College of Marin Beach Volleyball program closed out their home schedule with a pair of matches against Delta College and College of the Redwoods on Friday. They opened the day with a thrilling 4-1 loss to the Delta Mustangs and followed it up with a victory over the College of the Redwoods' Corsairs. Sophomores Ashley Chanthongthip, Sarah Harris and Alejandra Leon played in the final home matches of their College of Marin careers.

The Mariners opened the match with Delta with four straight losses but got an enjoyable finish to the match courtesy of their top pair.

Chanthongthip and Ashley Graham opened the match with a two-set loss to the fives of Delta 21-16 and 21-7. The duo led early on 13-8 but could not fend off a rally by the visiting Mustangs. Luisa Ayala returned from a lower body injury to pair with Nattasia Ferrin against the fours of Delta. They were defeated in straight sets 21-12 and 21-14.

Magnolia Johnson and Khadeejia Marcum did battle against the opposing threes and dropped their match 21-9 and 21-10. Kirsta Rodriguez-McKee and Amber Proctor competed well against the second squad from Delta but went down 21-12 and 21-16.

Despite the opening losses, Harris and Leon did not disappoint against top opposition. They trailed in the first set but came back to force extra points and won the first set 22-20. The sophomores were better in the second set with a 21-16 win to grab the match.

The Mariners' second match of the day went better than the first as they took on the College of the Redwoods Corsairs and grabbed victory 4-1. Redwoods could not field a fifth pair, so Marin was a awarded a victory in that match.

Chanthongthip and Ferrin paired up in the fours slot and went down to the visitors 21-15 and 21-5 to even the overall match at 1-1.

Johnson and Marcum were in control their entire match, taking down the threes from Redwoods 21-10 and 21-10.

Proctor and Rodriguez-McKee took part in a thrilling three set match as they dominated in the first set 21-5 before giving back the second 21-16. It went down to the wire, but they emerged with a third set win 15-13.

Harris and Leon finished off the match and the day with a two-set win 21-11 and 21-12 over the top team from College of the Redwoods.

The Mariners have just one match day left in the season as they place College of the Redwoods and Feather River at Sierra College on Thursday, April 25th. The Big Eight Pairs Championship will be held the day after at Sierra College as well.
