The Mariners had a split decision in their final matches of the 2019 season. College of Marin Beach Volleyball traveled to Sierra College in Rocklin for a pair of Big 8 Conference matches against Feather River and College of the Redwoods. They opened the day with a 5-0 thumping at the hands of Feather River but Marin bounced back with a narrow 3-2 win over College of the Redwoods.
Marin was competitive but could not truly threaten the Big 8 Champions from Feather River. Sarah Harris and Alejandra Leon were in it with the top squad from Quincy but ultimately fell in straight sets 21-13 and 21-17. The twos of Amber Proctor and Kirsta-Rodriguez McKee fought hard but were dropped by Feather River 21-11 and 21-15.
The other Mariners' pairs battled but suffered similar fates as they compatriots. Magnolia Johnson and Khadeejia Marcum fell to the threes of Feather River 21-10 and 21-8. Nattasia Ferrin and Luisa Ayala did their best but were defeated 21-8 and 21-13. The final pairing of Makenzie Graham and Ashley Chanthongthip went down 21-8 and 21-10.
Marin bounced back with a much more successful second match of the day against College of the Redwoods.
Harris and Leon opened with a thrilling three set victory. They dropped the first set 21-19 but rebounded to take the second set 21-16. The third set went down to the wire, but they emerged with a 15-13 win. Proctor and Rodriguez-McKee cruised through their match 21-16, 21-9 clinching the victory for Marin. Redwoods could not field a fifth pair and Marin grabbed the win with their three match wins.
Marin's margin for error was minimal as they went down in the 3's and 4's matches. Johnson and Marcum dropped their match in straight sets 21-17 and 22-20 before Ayala and Ferrin battled in a three-set match but went down 15-21, 21-17 and 16-14.
Thursday marked the conclusion to the 2019 team season. They finished with a 3-5 record in the Big 8 Conference and 5-12 overall on the year. The season itself is not yet over as the top two Mariners' pairs will compete in the conference pairs tournament on Friday, April 26th.
