Mariners Split Season Opener Beating Fresno City and Falling to West Valley

College of Marin Beach Volleyball kicked off the 2022 campaign battling with the best of the best. On Wednesday, College of Marin faced the indoor state champion Fresno City College and state runner up West Valley, beating Fresno 3-2 and falling to West Valley 4-1.

“We respect both of these programs and hold them in high regard,” said coach Lisa Vasquez. “We knew it was going to be a competitive day, and are really proud of our team for continuing to get better as the day progressed.”

Mackenzie Dugan and Kailani Kwan-Sy kicked off the day with a victory at the 3’s, beating Fresno 21-17, 21-17 on a cut shot by Dugan to end the match. Mackenzie and Kailani return to the Mariners after the spring 2020 season came to a sudden halt due to the pandemic. “I am so grateful for this opportunity to play the sport I love again,” exclaimed Dugan. The win at the 3’s solidified a dual victory for the Mariners.

In the second dual, the Mariners faced off against West Valley, falling short 4-1. College of Marin recorded a victory at the 4’s winning 21-19 and 21-18. Freshmen Gea Foggetti and Bela Fraga started their collegiate beach volleyball career’s match down 14-7, but had a miraculous comeback to take set one. “We knew we had nothing to lose and just wanted to have fun,” said Foggetti. “There is no doubt this team knows how to have fun and love battling together.” said coach Vasquez. “They play with so much joy, competitive spirit, and relentless pursuit.”

The Mariners continue pre-season competition against Gavilan College on Friday at 12pm at home.
