Mariners Bulldogged By San Mateo 13-4

The first game of a potenial four game series went in favor of the home team as the College of San Mateo scored in bunches and defeated College of Marin at San Mateo by the score of 13-4. The Mariners fell behind early 5-0 and could not lessen the deficit as the home team had a trio of four run innings to put the game away.

San Mateo drew first blood in the bottom of the first as the put two on and two out before RJ Prince drove an RBI single down the right field line to give his team a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Bulldogs added four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two run single by Prince.

The visitors from Marin trailed 5-0 until the sixth inning when MacLean Meyn tripled and scored on a single by Alex Davis. Down 5-1 the Mariners had a chance to add on but failed to do so. San Mateo promptly responded with four more runs on four hits to balloon their advantage to 9-1 at the end of six full innings.

The Mariners did not go quietly as they loaded the bases in the top of the seventh courtesy of three walks. Marcus Chiu rapped an RBI single to cut the San Mateo advantage to 9-2.  With two outs Meyn reached on an error which scored an additional pair for Marin, but they would get no closer than 9-4.

Wholesale changes for Marin in the bottom of the seventh meant San Mateo faced an almost entirely new team on defense. It proved little trouble for the home team as they scored another four runs on an RBI single, RBI double, sacrifice fly and an error. Up against a 13-4 deficit, Marin was unable to rally and were held scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.

It was a rough outing for Mariners pitcher Chrit Rudkin as he allowed nine runs and 10 hits in five innings of work. Meyn had a hit and two RBI for Marin in the losing effort. The Mariners will look to avenge the loss as they travel to San Mateo again on Thursday, February 23rd.
