Mariners Emerge from Folsom Lake Slugfest With 12-9 Victory

It has been an interesting non-conference season for College of Marin Baseball. After beginning the season with a series of close losses, the Mariners have recently begun to hit the ball, and win games because of it. At Folsom Lake on Wednesday, the Mariners bats erupted for 12 runs and 13 hits in a 12-9 victory.

Folsom Lake jumped out to an early three run advantage in the bottom of the second. A walk, hit by pitch and an error scored the home team's first run before a sac bunt, single and ground out plated two more.

Marin wasted no time responding in kind as Dominic Burke led off the top of the third with a double. He advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a double by Jakob Davidson to put the Mariners on the board. After a walk to MacLean Meyn, Alex Davis laced a double to drive in another run. Adam Hussain followed with an RBI groundout with tied the game at 3-3.

The Mariners took their first lead in the top of the fourth as Burke reached on an error with two outs. Marcus Chiu followed him to the plate, and mashed the pitch over the wall for a home run. It gave Marin a 5-3 lead, and was Chiu's fourth consecutive game with a home run.

Folsom Lake scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of walks, a sacrifice and a wild pitch, but Marin's pitcher Chase Gardner was able to limit the damage. The Mariners went back to work at the plate in the top of the fifth as they scored two more runs on three hits to push their advantage to 7-4. Folsom Lake scored a lone run in bottom of the fifth to pull within 7-5.

The seventh inning saw the Mariners expand their advantage as they put two on with none out. Jake Munoz drove in a pair with a double and scored on a balk. Jakob Davidson drove in Marcus Chiu with an RBI single to push Marin's lead to 11-5.

Folsom Lake would not be silenced despite the disadvantage as they rallied back with three of their own in the bottom of the seventh. With two on and two outs, a two run double followed by an RBI single cut the Mariners lead to 11-8.  Marin scored once more in the eighth and Folsom Lake once more in the ninth to give a final score of 12-9.

Jason Wutsch grabbed the win in relief and Dominic Burke got the save by retiring the final batter in the bottom of the ninth. Marcus Chiu was the offensive leader once again as he homered, singled, and had two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Marin has their third game in three days at Solano College on Thursday, March 9th
