COM Baseball Clinches Bay Valley Conference Title With 12-1 Victory Over Los Medanos

Once again, the Mariners are Bay Valley Conference Champions. The College of Marin Baseball team throttled Los Medanos College 12-1 to clinch their fourth title in the last five years. The Mariners hit four home runs, while Chris Allen, Chrit Rudkin and Bret Bowyer combined to allow just a single run to the visiting Mustangs.

Marin got off the deck early with a solo home run by Jake Munoz in the bottom of the second. Los Medanos responded with an RBI double in the top of the third to tie the game in the top half of the third inning.

The 1-1 tie did not last long as Marcus Chiu did what he does best in the bottom of the third. With a runner on and two outs, Chiu blasted his 13th home run of the season to give Marin a 3-1 lead. Chiu is tied for the second most home runs in the state of California.

Marin shortstop Alex Davis joined the homer parade with a solo shot of his own to lead off the fifth inning. The sixth inning proved decisive as the Mariners unloaded on Los Medanos. Marcus Chiu doubled and Jakob Davidson reached on an error to put runners on the corners with two outs. Consecutive RBI singles from Bryan Jakiemiec, Alex Davis and Nick Heimbroadt pushed the Marin lead to 7-1 before Christian Merriwether lined a three run home run for Marin's 8th, 9th and 10th runs of the game.

The Mariners added two more in the seventh as Adam Hussain walked and scored on a double by Davidson before he came around on a single by Munoz. The 12-1 advantage remained the same through the final two innings of play.

Chris Allen started on the hill for Marin and pitched very well through five innings allowing a single run and just six hits.  He was relieved by Chrit Rudkin who threw three shutout innings with four strikeouts. Bret Bowyer finished the game with a perfect ninth inning to clinch the title.

Chiu had a double, home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Davis had a home run of his own with two RBIs and two runs scored while Heimbroadt was three for three with an RBI and a run.

The Mariners face Los Medanos in the final game of the regular season on Friday, April 28th with postseason seeding on the line.
