Mariners Fall In Super Regional Opener To Delta 8-7

A last second comeback fell just one batter short as the Mariners pulled within one run in the ninth but could not push across the tying score as shortstop Alex Davis struckout to end the game. Marin trailed 8-4 with two away in the top of the ninth and fell just 90 feet short.

MacLean Meyn walked with one in the top of the ninth and moved to third on a single by Dominic Burke. After a strikeout by Marcus Chiu, Adam Hussain walked to load the bases with two down. Jakob Davidson lined a single to score one and keep the bases filled. Jake Munoz worked a bases loaded walk to push the score to 8-6 in favor of Delta College. Bryan Jakiemiec walked to cut the score to 8-7 but Marin was unable to get any closer as Delta College's Karsten Lee struck out Alex Davis to end the game.

College of Marin trailed for nearly the entire game as Delta opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a home run to take a 1-0 lead and took a 4-0 advantage by the end of the third inning.

The Mariners began their comeback in the top of the fourth as Davidson was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Munoz. Jakiemiec roped a double to drive in a pair and cut the Delta lead to 4-2. Delta got two back in the bottom of the fifth with a walk, double, sacrifice fly and wild pitch to move back ahead by four 6-2.

Marin got closer with a run in the top of the sixth as Munoz drove in Hussain with an RBI single. Hussain added an RBI single of his own in the top of the seventh as the Mariners cut the lead to 6-4.

Delta responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh from a pair of doubles. They added their eighth run in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of singles and a fielding error. The Mariners entered the ninth, down by four with just three outs to play with.

Chase Gardner started for the Mariners and allowed six runs in four a third innings. Chrit Rudkin relieved him in the fifth and pitched two and third allowing just one run. Jason Wutsch pitched the eighth inning and allowed one unearned run.

Hussain, Davidson and Munoz each had two hits an RBI and a run scored.

The Mariners have a short turnaround time with game two of the series at 1pm on Saturday, May 13th.
