College of Marin Baseball Falls Late To College of Sequoias 2-1

The Mariners had a grueling day Thursday, beginning with a long early morning drive to Visalia and ending with a tough 2-1 road loss to College of Sequoias. Jason Wutsch was tremendous for seven innings, but the bullpen could not hold on to a slim one run margin as the home team rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Mariners.

It was a pitcher's duel from the start as Marin's Wutsch matched zeroes with Sequoias Sagun Gainey through the first seven innings of the game. Marin had just a single hit, a Randy Fernandez double in the third off of the Sequoias starter. Wutsch was equally as good, allowing just two hits and three walks in his time on the hill.

The Mariners broke the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning as Owen Hamilton drew a walk, moved to second on a groundout, and reached third on a wild pitch. Randy Fernandez lofted a ball to the outfield which was deep enough to plate Hamilton and give Marin a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived for the Mariners. Michael Benz relieved Wutsch to star the bottom of the eighth. With one away Sequoias drew a walk and singled to put runners at the corners. Benz struck out the next batter before being relieved by Nick Roth. Roth yielded an RBI single and an RBI double to put the home team on top 2-1.

Marin had a chance in the ninth as Alex Davis led off with a single but the next three Mariners struck out to end the game.

It was a classic pitcher's duel that went against the Mariners. They luckily have a chance at redemption as they face College of Sequoias twice more in as many days.
