Less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in Visalia, the Mariners were back at it again, looking to put the previous day's demons to rest. The game did not go as planned however, as Marin fell behind early while the offense struggled to do anything against the Giants' pitching in a 7-2 road loss.
Sequoias got on the board early after Marin failed to score in the top of the first. The home team put runners on second and third with two out, before scoring one on a wild pitch, and a second on an RBI single.
Down 2-0, the Mariners had their chances to score but could not push any across. Marin put a runner on in the second, third and fifth innings but had no luck in advancing them. The Giants meanwhile extended their advantage in the fifth.
Sequoias had a runner on second with one down before an RBI double plated their third run of the game. A single put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly extended the Mariners deficit to 4-0 after five complete innings. The sixth saw Sequoias score again as two singles and a fielding error plated their fifth run of the game. While Marin was unable to score, the Giants added a pair more in the eighth on an RBI double with two away.
Marin made noise in the top of the ninth as Christian Merriwether single and scored on a two run bomb by Jake Munoz to make it 7-2. Alex Davis and Adam Hussain followed with walks but Sequoias countered with their closer who retired the next three batters to end the game.
Will Zurcher started for the Mariners and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing four runs and eight hits. Owen Hamilton relieved him and pitched 2.2 innings allowing three hits and an unearned run, while Ryan Moyer allowed two additional unearned runs in the eighth inning.
Arthur Joven started for Sequoias and threw seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine. Munoz had the two run homer for Marin while Alex Davis reached base three times in the game.
The Mariners' final game of the road trip is Saturday, February 10th against College of Sequoias as Marin looks to salvage a game against the Giants.
