The Mariners failed to score at San Mateo, scratching out six hits against the Bulldogs in a 7-0 road loss on Thursday. This came on the heels of scoring just one run on four hits in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat against the very same opponents. Jason Wutsch started for Marin but was outdueled by Jared Milch of San Mateo.
After a scoreless first inning, the San Mateo got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. A one out single, followed by a walk put two runners on before a booming doubled scored one to give San Mateo a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs added a second in the third inning on a double, single and sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 advantage after three complete.
Marin made a bit of noise in the fourth inning as they put two men on with one down, but a strikeout and groundout ended their threat. After going in order in the bottom of the fourth, San Mateo added two more in the fifth from an RBI single and a groundout to double their lead to 4-0. They added a trio of additional runs in the bottom of the sixth off a three run homer by Everett Lau to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Mariners had runners on in the seventh, eighth and ninth but could not push any runs across.
Wutsch threw five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) with eight hits and two strikeouts. Jack Hill allowed three runs in relief before Owen Hamilton, Cody McGunagle and Kyle Hinds closed out the game with three scoreless appearances. Alex Davis had three hits and JT Balano had a pair of doubles for the Mariners.
Everett Lau was 4 for 5 with a double, homerun and three RBIs on the afternoon.
The Mariners look to salvage the final game of the series at San Mateo on Saturday, February 24th.
