Hussain Powers Mariners to 10-2 Win Over Los Medanos

Bay Valley Conference play began on a high note for the Mariners as they defeated the Los Medanos College Mustangs 10-2 in Pittsburg. The Mariners led 6-1 after four complete and cruised to a 10-2 victory. Chris Allen earned his sixth win of the season with seven strong innings on the mound while Adam Hussain belted his first homer of the year for the Mariners.

Both teams failed to score in the first two innings of play, but Marin broke through the deadlock in the top of the third. Christian Merriwether and Randy Fernandez led off with walks and moved to second and third on a wild pitch with no outs. Jake Munoz lined an RBI single to plate Merriwether and give Marin a 1-0 lead. With one out MacLean Meyn hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Marin's second run of the inning. Los Medanos College answered back with one of their own in the bottom half courtesy of a double and an RBI single to cut the Mariners lead to 2-1.

Marin loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs before a fielding error plated two for the Mariners. With two away Adam Hussain knocked a two run single to increase the lead to 6-1. In the sixth Alex Davis singled to lead off and with one away Hussain sent a drive over the fence for a two run homer and increased the Mariners lead to 8-1. In the seventh, Marin added another two runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to get the score to double digits 10-1. Los Medanos pulled one back in the bottom half, but it was purely academic to set the final score of 10-2.

Chris Allen threw seven solid innings, and allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out five. The lefty improved his season record to 6-0 and has an ERA of 1.83 with 45 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched on the year. Ryan Moyer and Will Zurcher each threw a scoreless inning of relief to finish the game.

Hussain had a home run, two hits and four RBI on the day. Randy Fernandez led off and had three hits and three runs on the afternoon while Owen Hamilton and Merriwether each scored twice.

Next up for the Mariners is a road game against Solano College in Fairfield on Thursday, March 8th. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
