Allen Dominates As Mariners Open Conference Play With 12-2 Thumping of Contra Costa

A day later, but still a positive result for Marin. After rain pushed their Bay Valley Conference opener to Wednesday, the Mariners crashed the comets 12-2 in a game played at Laney College. Chris Allen was magnificent for Marin with eight shutout innings while the offense racked up six extra base hits to spark another run scoring binge. It was Marin's fourth straight game with double digit runs scored.

After a scoreless first inning the Mariners got to work in the bottom of the second. Their scored their first run as Adam Hussain walked, stole second and came around on an RBI single by Dominic Burke. It was merely an appetizer of the runs that were to come.

An error, single and passed ball put Mariners on second and third with one down in the third inning. Alex Davis lined an RBI single and MacLean Meyn followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Marin advantage to 3-0. The fourth saw Burke with a one out double, he scored on a triple off the bat of Christian Merriwether to push Mariners margin to 4-0.

On the mound Chris Allen retired the first twelve Contra Costa batters he faced. He allowed a single in the top of the fifth but nothing more. In the bottom half Jake Munoz walked stole second and scored on a single by Meyn for a 5-0 lead. Marin added two more in the sixth as Merriwether hit is second triple of the day, he scored on a groundout by Munoz and Davis doubled in Randy Fernandez for a 7-0 lead.

Allen pitched a perfect sixth and allowed a two out double in the seventh, but Contra Costa could not do any damage against the Mariners' ace. Allen struck out the side in the eighth, for his 10th, 11th and 12th strikeouts of the game.

The Mariners put the game to bed in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Munoz cleared the bases with a three run triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Meyn. James Harwell tripled home Meyn for good measure to give Marin a 12-0 lead heading to the ninth.

Allen departed after eight shutout innings, and the Comets were able to make hay against Mariners reliever Ryan Moyer, but the two runs scored did little to change the final score line as Marin took home the victory 12-2.

Allen earned his seventh win in as many starts on Wednesday with eight shutout innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out 12 opposing batters. The Mariners balanced offensive attack had four players with multiple hits and three with multiple RBIs. Merriwether had three hits, two triples and three runs scored while Munoz had four RBIs and two runs on scored on the day.

The Mariners second game against Contra Costa is scheduled for Saturday, March 17th with various delays thus far due to rain.
