Mariners' Baseball defeated the Solano College Falcons 4-2 on Thursday as Jason Wutsch turned in an excellent starting performance on the mound. Wutsch threw 7.2 innings and allowed a single run while walking none and striking out four. James Harwell had three hits and Christian Merriwether scored twice as the Mariners moved within one win of clinching a post season berth.

Wutsch retired the side in order in the top of the first and got some run support from his offense in the bottom half. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out before Adam Hussain worked a bases loaded walk to plate the first run of the game for a 1-0 lead.

Marin added on in the second inning. With one away Randy Fernandez doubled and Jake Munoz walked. Christian Merriwether singled to load the bases. James Harwell singled to drive in Fernandez and keep the bases loaded. Alex Davis followed with a single of his own to score Munoz and Merriwether to give Marin a 4-0 lead.

Solano had a runner on in the third but could not break through, Wutsch retired the side in order in the fourth and allowed two runners in the fifth but denied the Falcons any runs. They put runners on the corners in the sixth but Wutsch held them at bay. In the seventh, Solano put two on with none out but a fielder's choice and a double play erased the threat.

The Mariners were unable to add on despite having runners on in the fourth, fifth and seventh.

Wutsch retired the first two batters in the top of the eighth before hitting the next batter. He was replaced by Ryan Moyer who yielded a long home run to Solano's Dennin. With the score line reading 4-2, Nick Roth took over and retired the final batter of the eighth. He allowed the first batter to reach in the ninth bringing the tying run to the plate, but got a strike out throw out double play and a fly out to end the game.

Wutsch earned the victory, and Roth the save, his tenth of the season.

The win improved the Mariners' record to 24-11 overall and 13-4 in Bay Valley Conference play. They hold a one game lead over second place Los Medanos College.

Marin looks to sweep Solano on Saturday with a game in Fairfield scheduled for 1PM.
