An evening after being limited to just five hits and a single run, the Mariners offense broke out for eight runs as Marin came back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Reedley College Tigers 8-5 in Oakland. Marin hosted their second straight game at Laney College, and looked to be right at home as they recorded three run outbursts in the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead. Anthony Pomilia and Casey Armusewicz each had multi-hit games as Matthew Lozovoy pitched the final 3.2 innings to earn the victory for Marin.
The Mariners trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth when they began to make some noise with their bats. Pomillia and Armusewicz opened the inning with a pair of singles. After a strikeout an error by the Reedley right fielder plated Pomilia and put runners at second and third. Randy Fernandez hit into a fielder's choice plating Armusewicz and Eric Woodrow followed with an RBI single to cut the Reedley lead to a single run 5-4.
After a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, the Mariners got to work again in the bottom half. Marin loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, before Armusewicz tied the game at five with a bases loaded walk. Nicholas Caravello followed with a walk to give Marin their first lead 6-5. Fernandez walked in another run to put the Mariners ahead 7-5. Marin added their eighth run in the eighth inning as Pomilia singled in Conor Bardue.
Matthew Lozovoy took the hill in the sixth inning and hurled the final 3.2 innings of the game, striking out three while yielding, no hits, or runs and just a pair of walks. He earned the win in his first appearance of the season.
Reedley scored single runs in the first and second innings off of Mariners' starter Michael Benz. Marin loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with nobody out, but could only score a single run on a walk by Woodrow. Reedley increased their advantage to 4-1 with a two-run home run in the top of the third and added a fifth run in the sixth from a bases loaded walk. Benz struck out five and walked one, while allowing six hits and five runs in 5.1 innings.
Pomilia was three for five, with two runs and an RBI. Armusewicz had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Conor Bardue walked twice, scored a run and stole two bases in the game.
The victory was the first of the 2019 season for the Mariners whose next game is on the road at Cabrillo College on Tuesday, January 29th.
