Mariners' Baseball found themselves on the wrong side of a shutout for the second time in less than a week. College of Marin fell to the College of San Mateo Bulldogs 5-0 on Saturday with the game played at Santa Rosa Junior College. The Mariners and Bulldogs split the first two games of the series with San Mateo victorious 6-0 on Tuesday, February 19th while Marin took the win 6-5 on Thursday the 21st. The Mariners had abundant chances to score throughout Saturday's game, but three double plays were a primary contributor to their offensive woes.
Jackson Loder started on the hill for the Mariners and worked around a two out double in the first inning to give Marin a chance to draw first blood. The Mariners put two on with one away in the bottom half of the first, but a 4-6-3 double play off the bat Nicholas Caravello ended Marin's threat.
The visiting Bulldogs broke through in the second inning as Alec Ackerman lined a home run with two away to put San Mateo on top 1-0. Marin looked to respond as Conor Bardue and Eric Woodrow delivered back to back singles with one out. A groundout advanced them to second and third but Will Langan struck out as the Mariners remained scoreless.
San Mateo doubled their advantage in the third with a leadoff hit by pitch and wild pitch. With nobody out a double by Christain Ontai plated a second run for San Mateo. Marin went in order in the bottom of the inning and trailed 2-0 after three complete.
Matthew Lozovoy took over for Loder to start the fourth and held San Mateo scoreless in the fourth while Marin had another chance to breakthrough in the bottom half. Caravello led off with a walk, Randy Fernandez walked and Conor Bardue was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Unfortunately, Eric Woodrow struck out looking and Oscar Urbina grounded into a 5-4-3 double play as Marin could not push across a run.
San Mateo added single runs against Lozovoy in the fifth and sixth while Marin was limited to one baserunner that was erased by another double play. Both teams failed to score in the seventh before San Mateo scored their fifth run in the eighth inning off of Ryan Moyer.
The ninth inning came a went and while the Bulldogs did not score, but neither did the Mariners as they went down to end the game with a final score of 5-0.
Loder took the loss as he allowed two runs in three innings. Lozovoy pitched the fourth through seventh and yielded two runs while Moyer pitched the final two innings and allowed just a single run. Conor Bardue was the only Mariners hitter to record multiple hits, while Landen Moran reached base twice on a hit and a walk.
Ackerman had a home run, a double, and an RBI for San Mateo while JJ Ota had a home run and two RBI.
The Mariner record sits at 5-9 after 14 non-conference games. Next up is a road game at Merced College, weather permitting, on February 26th at 2pm.
