Fernandez, Late Inning Heroics Lead Mariners To 4-3 Victory Over Laney

Three games in four days can be a bit debilitating, but with a win, all is forgiven. Tied 3-3 in the ninth, Randy Fernandez came around to score on a fielder's choice as Marin held off Laney for a 4-3 win in the rubber game of the series. Fernandez and Davis Barkocy were the offense for Marin, accounting for all five the Mariner's hits and two of their four runs.

Marin led 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, when the home team rallied to tie the game. Laney put a runner on second with two down before Alex Vick tied the game with a pinch hit single.

The Mariners responded in kind as Fernandez reached second on an error to lead off. With one away Fernandez moved to third on a wild pitch. Jacob Berg hit an infield squib that allowed him to reach, he rounded first and moved towards second where he was thrown out, but on the same play an errant throw by the third baseman allowed Fernandez to come to the plate and score the go ahead run.

Michael Benz took the hill in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a one out single, before a double play erased the threat and ended the game in favor of Marin.

Laney took an early lead with a run in the first off of Mariners' starter Matthew Lozovoy. The home team loaded the bases with two out before a wild pitch opened the scoring.

Marin tied the game at 1-1 in the third as Fernandez doubled and stole third before scoring on a Berg fielder's choice. They took their first lead in the sixth as Fernandez delivered a two out single that plated Dionathan Cornet and Conor Bardue for a 3-1 lead. Laney scored their second run on an infield groundout in the sixth. The 3-2 score remained until the home half the eighth inning.

Lozovoy delivered a solid start on the hill. He threw 5.2 innings and allowed two runs and four hits while striking out eight. Loder ended up with the victory, getting seven outs and yielding one run while Benz had a shutout ninth for the save.

Fernandez had three hits, including a double, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. He either scored or drove in all of Marin's runs.

The win pushed the Mariners into first place of the Bay Valley Conference with a 6-2 record, they are a half game ahead of Los Medanos College. Next up for the Mariners is a three-game series with the Contra Costa Comets, beginning on Tuesday, March 26th.
