Mariners’ Baseball Outmatched By Solano 11-6

The last week of the regular season did not begin on the right foot for the Mariners. They visited the Solano College Falcons on Tuesday and ended up on the wrong side of an 11-6 score. Marin trailed 6-0 and 11-2 before closing the gap with four late runs. Anthony Pomilia had three hits and scored two runs for the Mariners.

Demian White started for Marin and perfect in the first inning. His perfection did not last as he was battered for five runs over the next two innings. Solano scored a pair of runs in the second on a hit by pitch, a double and a single coupled with a wild pitch. It did not improve in the third inning as the Falcons scored three runs courtesy of two doubles and a triple to take a 5-0 lead.

The Mariners offense sputtered to the tune of just three hits in the first five innings. After Solano added their sixth run in the bottom of the fifth, College of Marin finally got on the board in the sixth. It was a gifted run as Jacob Berg walked and stole second with two outs. Landen Moran hit a hard hopper to second that was misplayed and allowed Berg to score to cut the lead to 6-1.

Solano continued their barrage on the Mariners pitching staff, taking advantage of Cody McGunagle in the bottom half of the sixth. They loaded the bases before another walk drove in their seventh run of the game. Tyler Quintanilla relieved McGunagle and yielded another bases loaded walk to make it 8-1. A double play squashed the threat but allowed Solano to plate their ninth.

Doubles by Dionathan Cornet and Jonathan Sumner plated Marin's second run in the seventh but it was again answered in force by Solano who scored twice more in the bottom half for a 11-2 lead. The Mariners managed to make the final score respectable as Randy Fernandez had a two-run double in the eighth, but in the end, Marin could only manage to scratch out six runs in the game.

Marin was stymied by Solano starter Alex Clouthier who allied just one earned run in seven innings. White took the loss for the Mariners with McGunagle and Quintanilla responsible for the remainder of the allowed runs. Rodwell Cutkelvin pitched a scoreless ninth in his 2019 season debut.

Pomilia had two doubles for the Mariners and Fernandez had a pair of RBIs.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 13-5 in the Bay Valley Conference, a half game behind the Los Medanos Mustangs. College of Marin travels to Marysville on Wednesday, April 17th to take on the Yuba College 49ers at 2:30pm.
