Baseball Drops Final Regular Season Contest At Laney 10-3

College of Marin Baseball closed out the 2019 regular season with a 10-3 loss to the Laney College Eagles. The game was over by the end of the third as Laney tagged Mariners' starter Jackson Loder with all 10 runs. While the result was ugly, the outlook is bright as the Mariners clinched their spot in the postseason. Laney is left on the sidelines with the win over Marin as their only solace. Conor Bardue and Landen Moran were the offensive standouts for Marin while Rodwell Cutkelvin and Tyler Quintanilla did a fine job in mop up duty on the mound.

The Mariners could not score in the first inning but Laney made plenty of noise in the home half. They loaded the bases with no outs before a single, walk and sacrifice fly gave them a quick 3-0 lead. A walk and a hit by pitch reloaded the bases where another hit by pitch followed by a two run single quickly doubled their lead to 6-0.

Loder faired considerably better in the second as he retired the first two batters of the inning. Unfortunately, a walk, single and another single gave Laney a 7-0 lead after two complete.

Marin went down in order in the third, and Laney kept the onslaught up. A single and a pair of errors plated Laney's eighth run. Loder loaded the bases with two singles and walk before he was replaced by Rodwell Cutkelvin with two outs. The reliever struggled off the bat with back to back bases loaded walks to give the Eagles a double-digit advantage, but he settled down to end the inning on a popup.

Marin did what they could to respond in the fourth as Moran led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Dionathan Cornet drove him in with an RBI ground out to put the Mariners on the board trailing 10-1. Randy Fernandez and Bardue each singled and moved to third on a groundout. Isaac Woldt followed with a two-run single to cut the Eagles lead to a touchdown at 10-3.

The rest of the game played out almost robotically, the Mariners had a few chances to score, but no real threats, while Laney went through the motion until the game reached its ultimate conclusion.

Moran had three hits including a pair of doubles while Bardue had a double and a run scored. Cutkelvin stayed on the mound through the sixth inning and allowed just two hits over his final three innings. Quintanilla pitched the seventh and eighth innings and retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts.

The 10-3 loss was Marin's 19th of the season but they finished in second place in the Bay Valley Conference with a 13-8 record. They qualified for the CCCAA playoffs due to their second-place finish and 20-19 overall record.
