Mariners' Baseball failed to capitalize on an excellent starting performance by Owen Hamilton. The sophomore pitcher hurled seven superb innings but fielding and hitting faltered down the stretch, resulting in an 11-inning loss to the visiting Reedley Tigers. The Mariners trailed early on but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Reedley tied it up in the top of the ninth and pushed across the eventual winning run in the 11th.
Hamilton retired Reedley in order in the first and second innings. The Tigers put two on with one out in the third, but a caught stealing and popup ended the threat. Hamilton bounced back with a perfect fourth as well. On offense the Mariners put individual runners on in the first and second innings but could not score. They were retired in order in the third and fourth innings.
Reedley broke the scoreless deadlock in the visiting half of the fifth inning. The leadoff hitter reached on an error. The following hitter laid a bunt down with the subsequent throw finding the outfield. The result was a runner scored with another on third base. An RBI groundout plated a run to put Reedley up 2-0.
Marin had a chance to bounce back in the fifth with a leadoff double by Conor Bardue. They had runners on the corners with one out, but Tyler Shelley's blistered liner was caught and Isaac Woldt was doubled off first.
All of the Mariners offense game in the bottom of the seventh as Bardue led off with a single. He was caught stealing but Nick George followed with a single of his own. Woldt walked and Shelley singled to load the bases with one down. Anthony Pomilia hit a chopper to short and throw was wild allowing the first run to score. A misplay by Reedley allowed Tarantino to come around after pinch running for Woldt as Tyler Shelley looked to put the Mariners ahead. Shelley rounded third and was contacted by the Reedley fielder. The umpired awarded home a result of the interference giving the Mariners a 3-2 lead.
Marin held the lead going into the ninth inning when Shelley took the mound to attempt the save. The first two batters reached on a walk and a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Shelley struck out the next batter but followed with a wild pitch that tied the game.
The Mariners went in order in the ninth and failed to score in the 10th. Riley Cronin pitched a scoreless 10th for Marin and retired the first two batters in the 11th. The final batter Danny Gamez blasted a pitch out to left center to put Reedley ahead 4-3. Marin failed to score in the 11th as the game ended.
Hamilton threw seven innings and allowed three hits a walk and two unearned runs. Nick Kennison pitched a scoreless eighth before Shelly took over in the ninth. Eric Woodrow, Bardue and George hit had two hits for the Mariners.
Marin's homestand continues on Tuesday at home as they host the Cabrillo Seahawks at 2pm.
