Baserunning Mistakes Doom Mariners In 4-2 Loss To Cabrillo

College of Marin Baseball wrapped up their season opening homestand with an unfortunate 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Cabrillo College Seahawks. The Mariners made numerous base running errors throughout that killed several run scoring opportunities. Trent Free started for the Mariners, but wobbled at times and was replaced in the fourth by Nick Kennison who pitched the remainder of the game. Joseph Bogdan was the Mariners offensive stud of the day with three hits a run and an RBI.

Cabrillo got on the board early with a run in the first. The leadoff batter double and the second-place hitter followed with a walk. A one out wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third before a groundout gave the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.

The Mariners tried to respond but could not score through the first four innings of play. The Seahawks got to Free in the fourth inning as they loaded the bases with two down. A single to the gap plated two more and Kennison came on in relief. He wiggled out of trouble and gave the Mariners a chance to rally.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Mariners finally got to work. Bogdan singled to lead off and moved to second with one down on a walk. A wild pitch put runners at the corners for Jacob Berg who lined a single plating Bogdan. Marin had a chance for more as Eric Woodrow reached on a fielding error with two down, but an over zealous Oscar Urbina was thrown out at the plate, trying to score from second on the play.

Kennison kept the Seahawks scoreless through the top of the eighth as the Mariners inched closer in the bottom half. With two down Nick Caravello walked and Joey Loveless followed with a single. Joseph Bogdan lined a single to score Caravello and cut the Mariners deficit to 3-2. Nick George pinch hit but grounded out to end the inning.

Cabrillo added a run in the ninth on a pair of singles and bloop double to push their lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the ninth Anthony Pomilia lined a shot to the gap but was thrown out at second ending the game.

Free took the loss, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs and four hits. Kennison pitched the remaining 5.1 innings of the game for Marin and allowed just one run and six hits while striking out five. Joseph Bogdan was the Mariners offensive stud of the day with three hits a run and an RBI.

The loss dropped the Mariners to 1-2 on the year. They have an upcoming road trip to College of Sequoias which begins on Thursday, December 30th.
