Early Runs Doom Mariners In 9-3 Loss At Sequoias

College of Marin Baseball played their second game in as many days at College of Sequoias on Friday. The result was the same as game one, a loss to their hosts the Giants. While the opener was a taught affair, the deciding game in the series was practically over before it began. The Giants scored five runs off Mariners' pitching in the first two innings and Marin was unable to mount a sizable comeback as they fell 9-3.

Sophomore Matt Lozovoy started for the Mariners and was under siege from the first pitch. After the Mariners did not score in the top of the first, Sequoias led off the home half with a single. With two down a walk put runners on first and second before a double plated both for a 2-0 lead.

Marin failed to score in the second but the Giants did not. A leadoff double followed by a single plated Sequoias third run before a one out single followed by a two run double pushed their advantage to 5-0.

The Mariners rallied with single runs in the third and fourth, but Sequoias responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 6-2.

Marin's offense has struggled all season and continued to do so on Friday. Despite many opportunities, the clutch hit proved elusive. Down 7-2 in the seventh, the Mariners loaded the bases with one out. Jacob Berg flew out to shallow right but a fortunate error after the cash allowed one Marin run to score. Sequoias added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth and Marin could not mount a big comeback in their final at bat as they fell 9-3.

Lozovoy took the loss, allowing six runs and eight hits in four innings. Jack Cottrell made his season debut on the hill but allowed three runs and five hits in 3.1 innings.

The Mariners were limited to just seven hits and three runs in the game. Joey Loveless was the only Mariner with multiple hits, while Trent free had Marin's only extra base hit, a double.

The loss was Marin's fourth in five games as they look to salvage the final game of the series with Sequoias on Saturday, February 1st. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
