Mariners’ Baseball Blasts Lassen 10-2

College of Marin Baseball awoke from their season long hitting slump with a 10 run effort against the visiting Lassen College Cougars on Thursday. The Mariners scored 10 runs on 14 hits and were sparked by the season debut of Dionathan Cornet, one of the top hitters from the 2019 season. The Mariners fell behind in the third, but rallied back with big innings in the fourth and seventh to make the game a laugher.

Nick George started for the Mariners and was efficient in his four innings on the mound. He retired the first six Lassen hitters before committing a fielding error to begin the third. The following hitter tripled in Lassen's first run, but George managed to keep the Cougars from adding on in the inning. He put two runners on in the fourth, but stranded them to keep Marin within a run.

Marin failed to score in the first three innings, but that all changed in the fourth. Nick Caravello led off with a single and moved to second on an error off the bat of Joey Loveless. Cornet laced a double that plated Caravello to tie the game at 1-1. With one away Anthony Pomilia blasted a two bagger that scored Loveless and Cornet to give Marin a lead. Conor Bardue followed with a single of his own to score Pomilia and cement a four spot for the Mariners in the fourth.

George took the hill in the fifth and walked the leadoff hitter before giving way to Tyler Shelley. Shelley yielded a one out RBI single to cut Marin's lead to 4-2, but after that he was practically lights out for the remainder of the game. He retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh and put Marin in a good position to grab the win.

The Mariners' offense put the game out of reach in the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs. Cornet was hit by a pitch to force in a run, before a passed ball allowed a second run to score. Trent Free followed with a two run triple and Pomilia singled him home to complete a five run frame.

Nick Caravello delivered a run scoring single in the eighth to put the Mariners in control at 10-2.

Shelley held Lassen scoreless in the eighth and worked around some trouble in the ninth to preserve the game and earn the win.

George pitched four plus innings and was charged with two runs, one earned. Shelley pitched the final five frames to earn the victory. He allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out eight to earn his second win of the season.

Caravello led Marin with three hits, he scored twice and drove in a run. Pomilia had three runs batted in on two hits, while Cornet had two hits scored twice and a pair of RBIs.

The victory was the Mariners third of the year against seven losses.
