College of Marin Baseball Tops Mission To Sweep Double Header

Mariners Baseball enjoyed a very successful Thursday as beat both Lassen and Mission in a doubleheader. After defeating the Cougars 10-2 in the opener, Marin edged the Saints in the nightcap by a score of 5-3. Marin scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to take the lead which the bullpen preserved for the win. Anthony Pomilia had two hits including a homer, while Matt Lozovoy earned his first win of the season.

After a scoreless first inning the visiting Saints took a lead courtesy of a Mariners error. A one out walk was followed by a throwing error, compounded with a misplay that put the visitors in the lead 1-0.  Lozovoy managed to work around the error and limited the damage to just a single run. He allowed runners in the third and fourth, but no runs and retired the side in order in the fifth.

Marin got on the board in the fifth and carried that momentum to build a lead. Trent Free led off the home half of the inning with a walk and Pomilia homered to give Marin a 2-1 advantage. In the sixth Joey Loveless led off with a double and came home with a double by Dionathan Cornet. Cornet stole third and came home on a passed ball. The Mariners managed to load the bases before Eric Woodrow delivered a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1.

Lozovoy worked his way through a scoreless sixth and gave way to Freshman Zach Tonnerre to begin the seventh.  The reliever was rudely greeted with a solo homerun by Mission, but he managed to keep them from adding on in the seventh. Mission did score again in the eighth with a single, coupled with two passed balls, put a runner on third. A sacrifice fly plated the runner to cut Marin's lead to 5-3.

Nick Kennison took over in the ninth and faced some adversity as he attempted to record his first career save. He allowed a walk and a single to begin, before a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. The freshman struck out the next hitter but walked the following one to load the bases. Kennison executed on the final pitch of the game, inducing a harmless fly ball to left.

Lozovoy earned the victory with six innings on the mound. He allowed one unearned run and three hits, while striking out six. Tonnerre allowed two runs in two innings, while Kennison worked through trouble to earn the save in the ninth.

Pomilia had a home run, a single and two RBIs on the day. Dionathan Cornet had a double, stolen base, RBI and a run scored, while Trent Free scored a pair of runs.

The victory was the Mariners third consecutive and fourth of the year. They host the Lassen College Cougars on Valentine's Day with first pitch scheduled for 10am.
