Mariners Baseball Throttles San Mateo 12-4 In Series Opener

College of Marin Baseball began their crucial series with the College of San Mateo in fine style as they pummeled the Bulldogs 12-4. Marin scored in each in the first five innings and led 11-4 midway through the game. It was the Mariners fifth win of the year as they handed San Mateo their second defeat of the season. Dionathan Cornet had three hits and four runs batted in on the day while starting pitcher Zach Tonnerre earned the win with a solid six inning start.

The visiting Bulldogs took an early lead with a pair of singles and sacrifice fly in the top of the first, but that advantage would not last long.

The Mariners got on the board in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single from Cornet to score Anthony Pomilia. Cornet came around on an error and RBI ground out to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead after one complete.

The floodgates opened as the Mariners scored at will early on. Jacob Berg had a two run single in the second to make it 4-1 Marin. They scored a run on an error in the third, before a double by Isaac Woldt plated another to make the score 6-3.

Tonnerre worked out of the trouble in the second, but did allow a few runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs had runners on second and third before a pair of sacrifice flies plated two. They added their fourth run in the fourth inning with an RBI single, temporarily cutting Marin's advantage to only 6-4.

The Mariners did not back down as they continued to add on. They scored a quartet of runs in the inning thanks to RBI hits by Cornet, Eric Woodrow and Conor Bardue to lead 10-4 after four complete. Cornet added another run scoring hit in the fifth for Marin's 11th run. The Mariners cruised the rest of the way, adding their 12th run with a sac fly in the seventh.

Tonnerre earned the victory and pitched the first six innings allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. He gave way to Nick George who pitched the final three frames and allowed no hits and just two walks with three strikeouts to earn the save.

Marin compiled 14 hits and five walks in the 12-4 victory, their highest run scoring total of the 2020 season. Cornet had three singles, four RBIs and two runs scored in the game. Eric Woodrow had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

The victory pushed their season record to 5-8 as they visit these same Bulldogs in San Mateo on Thursday, February 20th.
