Seven College of Marin Student-Athletes Nominated For Scholar-Athlete Award

In the face of the pandemic, a number of Mariners' student-athletes continued to succeed in the virtual classroom. Seven athletes from five intercollegiate teams were nominated for the prestigious statewide Scholar-Athlete Award. To qualify, a student-athlete needed to complete two years of competition, and 36 units with a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Former Mariners' Pitcher Will Zurcher took home the same award in the 2017-2018 academic year.

College of Marin Volleyball sported both Mariners to represent multiple intercollegiate teams. Magnolia Johnson and Sasha Urban each played indoor volleyball in the fall before breaking apart in the spring seasons. Johnson competed for the Beach Volleyball Team while Urban took her talents to the pool for the Swim & Dive Team.

Magnolia Johnson played two seasons for the Indoor Volleyball Team and two years for the Beach Volleyball Team. Inside, Johnson played Libero and led the Mariners defense. In the sand, she played for the Mariners' twos in seven matches. Johnson earned her AA-T in English and recently transferred to Mills College to continue her academic and athletic careers.

Sasha Urban played outside hitter for the Indoor Volleyball Team and specialized in the Breaststroke for the Swim Team. Urban recorded 160 Kills and 218 digs in the 2019 season. She had seven top five finishes in the pool, with a pair of race wins in just four 2020 season meets. The sophomore is returning to College of Marin with plans to compete in the pool in the spring of 2021.

Wendy Fullam represented the Women's Soccer Team. The sophomore captain excelled all over the field in the fall of 2019. She played in the midfield, on defense, and even in goal for a few matches. In the classroom, Fullam completed her AA-T in Psychology and is looking to continue her academic career.

The College of Marin Baseball Team led the way with four nominations.  They include outfielder Jacob Berg, pitcher Owen Hamilton, outfielder Oscar Urbina, and catcher Isaac Woldt.

Jacob Berg hit .313 in 21 games with nine extra base hits and 12 RBIs in the 2020 season. He had a double, triple and scored twice in a Mariners win on February 7th. Berg recently transferred to UC Santa Barbara to focus on his academic career.

Owen Hamilton served as the Mariners ace during the 2020 season hurling 46.1 innings, and allowing only 14 earned runs. His best game came on Valentine's Day as he threw 10 shutout innings. Hamilton completed his AA-T in Kinesiology and earned a scholarship to pitch for the University of Maryland Baltimore County for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Oscar Urbina hit .379 in 14 games. The penultimate game of the season was Urbina's best as he had three hits, including a double and homer with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Urbina transferred to UC Santa Barbara this fall.

Isaac Woldt hit .316 in eight games in the 2020 season. His best game came on February 5th as he connected on a pair of base hits. Due to the pandemic, he is returning to College of Marin to continue his studies and compete for the Mariners in the 2021 Baseball Season.

Overall the Mariners boast an impressive combo of athletic and academic talent. The aforementioned seven athletes have and will continue to succeed in the classroom and on the field, court, or pool.
