KENTFIELD, Calif. – The College of Marin Mariners continued their strong start to Bay Valley Conference play, taking two out of three games against the Laney College Eagles in Week 2 action. The Mariners dominated the first two contests with commanding wins before running into trouble in the series finale.
Game 1: Mariners Shut Out Eagles in Statement Win
Marin opened the series at home with a stellar all-around performance, securing an 8-0 victory. Pitching was the story, as starter Charles Veley was untouchable across eight innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five while walking none. Kai Beehler closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
Offensively, Marin broke through in the seventh inning when Adrian Ruiz delivered a clutch two-run triple to get the Mariners on the board. They piled on six more runs in the eighth, highlighted by RBI contributions from Wyatt Davis, Gilbert Roth, Logan Fiene, and Danil Wells. Ruiz capped off his big day with another two-run triple, finishing with four RBIs in the game.
Game 2: Offensive Explosion Powers Marin to 13-4 Victory
The Mariners carried their momentum into Game 2, unleashing a 13-run outburst on 10 hits in Oakland. Despite an early 1-0 lead, Marin steadily built its advantage, scoring in six different innings.
Wyatt Davis and Derek Bartram were the catalysts, driving in three runs apiece. Dante Caiati and Caden Sta Maria also chipped in with multi-RBI performances. Speed was a weapon for Marin, as they swiped four bases and capitalized on multiple Laney miscues, including a balk that led to a run.
On the mound, Anthony Del Prete picked up his fifth win of the season, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing two runs. Marin’s bullpen did its job, holding the Eagles to just two runs over the final 3.1 innings to secure the win and remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0.
Game 3: Mariners Stifled in Series Finale
Hoping for a series sweep, Marin instead ran into a roadblock as Laney turned the tables with a 6-0 shutout in Kentfield. The Mariners’ bats went cold, managing just three hits while striking out 11 times.
Laney’s pitching was dominant, keeping Marin off-balance all game. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ offense found its stride, capitalizing on key opportunities to put runs on the board. The loss snapped Marin’s five-game conference win streak and was a reminder of the challenges ahead.
Looking Ahead
Despite the Game 3 stumble, Marin (15-9-1, 5-1 BVC) remains one of the top teams in the Bay Valley Conference. They’ll look to bounce back in their next series. With strong pitching and an opportunistic offense, the Mariners are proving to be a force in the BVC this season. Next week, they will take on the Napa Valley College Storm on Tuesday, March 25th (Away), Thursday, March 27th (Home), and Saturday, March 29th (Away).
