Men’s Basketball Drops Road Battle To Chabot Gladiators 80-69

Mariner's Men's Basketball put up a gallant effort on Saturday, but could not push past the 19th ranked Chabot College Gladiators. Marin kept in contact the entire game but could not get over the hump in an 80-69 loss in Hayward. Franco Barefield and Jalen Chandler led the Mariners with 14 points each in the game.

Marin began the game on a high note as the Mariners led 10-4 just five minutes in. They led 19-14 with 9:40 remaining in the first half when the Gladiators began to rally. A spinning driving layup coupled with a foul brought Chabot within two before the home team went on a 16-7 run to take a 33-27 lead with 2:20 on the clock. The Mariners were unable to combat Chabot and went into halftime trailing 37-28.

The second half saw the Mariners strike back punctuated by a fast break dunk by Jameel Jones with a tremendous behind the back assist by Franco Barefield to bring the Mariners within a point at 40-39. Marin took the lead in the ensuing possession as both teams traded baskets until the score was tied up at 49-49 with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Though the Gladiators could not pull away from the Mariners, the visitors were unable to keep the game tied. Chabot pushed their advantage to 61-54 and Marin could not complete their rally. The home team extended their advantage to double digits as the final score line read 80-69 in Chabot's favor.

Barefield had 14 points and two assists on the day while Chanlder had 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. The team got contributions up and down the roster as Jameel Jones had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Julian Bryant added seven points while Alfonso Murrie had 10 points and a team high nine boards. Malik Ghiden had a solid game as well with eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

Jabari Sweet led Chabot with 20 points and four blocks.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 4-4 in the 2019-2020 season. They have a tall order ahead of them as they face Fresno City College at the Modesto College Tournament on Thursday, December 12th. The Fresno City Bulldogs are currently ranked 13th in the state as tip off for that game is scheduled for 6pm.
