Kentfield, CA – May 22, 2023 – College of Marin is excited to announce the expansion of Head Men's Basketball Coach LyRyan Russell's role within the program. In addition to his current position, Coach Russell will now serve as a full-time Kinesiology Instructor. With an impressive career spanning over 20 years and a deep-rooted passion for fitness, coaching, and mentoring, Russell brings a unique blend of expertise, mentorship, and career development skills to the College of Marin Kinesiology and Athletics program.
Coach Russell's unwavering commitment to excellence both on and off the court has been a hallmark of his career. With a background in counseling, he provides players with comprehensive experience, equipping them with extensive knowledge in basketball, career development, and essential life skills. By fostering a growth mindset within the program, Coach Russell ensures that success extends beyond the court, positively impacting players' personal lives.
One of Russell's notable achievements throughout his coaching tenure is his track record of academic success. Over the past decade, his teams have maintained an impressive program GPA of 3.0 or higher, emphasizing the significance of education as a vital component of long-term success beyond the players' athletic endeavors.
Having been an integral part of the College of Marin men's basketball program for the past two years, Coach Russell's promotion to full-time Head Coach is a testament to his exceptional performance and unwavering dedication to the team's triumph. College of Marin aims to leverage Russell's vast experience and expertise to further elevate the men's basketball program. The 2022-23 season exemplified his commitment to recognizing and nurturing talent within the organization. Despite a challenging previous season, the Mariners concluded the year with an overall record of 15-13 and an impressive conference record of 11-5, showcasing Coach Russell's ability to bring the best out of his teams.
Before joining College of Marin Athletics, Coach Russell held various coaching positions, including Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Sacred Heart High School, San Francisco, and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Presidio Middle School. Moreover, he served as the Assistant Athletic Director and Summer Training Coordinator at Stuart Hall School, where he honed his leadership skills and cultivated a passion for guiding young athletes.
Russell is an esteemed alumnus of the University of San Francisco, where he earned a Master's degree in School and College Counseling. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Sports Medicine with a specialization in Sport Physiology from the same institution.
