Mariners Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener at Skyline

The Mariners traveled to San Bruno to take on the Skyline College Trojans for their season-opening match-up. The team went out and showed grit and teamwork throughout the game. The score was fairly balanced throughout the game with three players scoring in double digits. The leading scorers for the Mariners were Anton Williams with 12 points; Ray-John Jackson and Lukas Prongos with 11 points. The top rebounder for the game was Lukas with 11 rebounds, posting his first double-double of the season. Five players scored 7-9 points, if they keep this team the Mariners will be a hard team to beat this season.

Coach Russell commented “this team is versatile and tough. If we continue to get better each game, we can be a team that has to be reckoned with come playoff time.”

Sophomore leader Daniel Fagan helped set the tone for the team by involving his teammates offensively. As the leading scorer from last season, Daniel looked to be a distributor and did a good job starting the year by leading the team in the right direction. Coming in off the bench, Kori McCoy played exceptionally well on the defensive end. His ball pressure and energy ignited a fire for the Mariners that lasted for the remainder of the game. Tre McPherson, AJ Gilbert, Blake Murray, and Devin Mims all gave great minutes.

The Mariners will take this momentum into San Francisco as they compete in the City College of San Francisco Tip-Off Classic on Fri. 11/4 and Sat. 11/5.

Next up: The Mariners will host West Valley College on Tue. 11/8 at 4 pm at the Don Barksdale Court.
