Mariners’ Men’s Soccer Downed by Mustangs 7-1

College of Marin Men's Soccer hosted the Canada College Mustangs on Saturday. While the weather was perfect, the result was not, as the Mariners fell to their visitors 7-1. The Mustangs held a two-goal lead within the first 20 minutes of play, and while Marin had some excellent spells of play it was not enough against Canada who compiled 23 shots, 12 on goal in the match.

The Mustang's Ryan Paiva scored his first of three goals in the 12th minute, and his teammate Felipe Aguayo followed suit with a goal in the 16th minute. Trailing 2-0 the Mariners had a solid run of play for 20 minutes, but could not lessen the deficit. Paiva added his second for Canada in the 39th minute and completed his first half hat track with a goal in the 44th minute to make the game 4-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Marin with a few opportunities, including a penalty in the 48th minute. Peter Carroll smashed the try from the spot home to pull Marin within three at 4-1. Unfortunately, it would not last as Dro Avetian bagged a brace in under five minutes with goals in the 66th and 70th minutes to put the Mustangs on top 6-1. Ryota Nakashima added another in the 87th minute for a 7-1 final score.

Alec Bakhshandeh and George Vartholomeos split the duties in goal and combined for five saves. Peter Carroll scored his second goal of the season for the Mariners on a converted penalty kick.

It was the Mariners fifth consecutive defeat after a victory over Monterey Peninsula to open the season, but they did avoid their third straight clean sheet.

The Mariners' next match is at Chabot College on September 17th as they take on the Gladiators at 2:00pm.
