College of Marin Men's Soccer wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a gripping match at Monterey Peninsula College on Friday. The Mariners led 1-0 at the break and 3-1 in the second half, but a furious comeback by the Lobos left the Mariners on the wrong side of a 4-3 final score. Peter Carroll, Kristoffer Wangberg and Jonathan Raphael each netted for Marin.

Neither team made their mark early on in the match, but the Mariners drew first blood in the 36^th minute as Monterey brought down a Marin attacker inside the 18-yard box, yielding a penalty.  The Mariners' designed penalty taker Peter Carroll stepped to the spot with confidence and converted, but it was disallowed. He was issued a redo and converted again. The second try counted as the Mariners led 1-0.

The second half saw the Mariners double their lead in the 66^th minute. Daniil Menshikov pounced on a loose ball in the 18-yard box and fed Kristoffer Wangberg for a 2-0 Marin lead. Their advantage did not last long as Roland Dimson scored in the 72^nd minute for Monterey to cut the lead in half.

The Mariners responded in the 76^th minute as Jonathan Raphael intercepted a clearance from MPC and blasted a shot from distance past the Lobos' keeper and into the net for a 3-1 score in favor the Mariners.

The match, while appearing in Marin's favor, saw momentum swing considerably over the final quarter of an hour.

Roland Dimson scored his second goal in the 78^th minute to cut the lead to 3-2. Four minutes later MPC drew level as Fernando Cervantes served up Adrien Alexander for a 3-3 score line. Controversy ensured in the final minutes as MPC was awarded a questionable penalty that Fernandez Cervantes converted in the 87^th minute. Marin fought, but could not equalize as fell at the final whistle 4-3.

It was a contentious match on both sides as the Mariners drew five yellow cards and Monterey a yellow and a red card.

Carroll and Wangberg each scored their team leading fourth goals of the season while Raphael netted his first of the 2019 season. Menshikov recorded his second assist of the year as Bryan Rodriguez made four saves in goal.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 1-8 on the year, but they have a clean slate in the Bay Valley Conference. They open BVC competition with a 4pm match at Napa Valley College on Tuesday, October 1^st.
